When I started this blog, I really did try to promise myself that I would update it regularly. Well, that didn't last very long. I see I haven't posted anything new in almost a month. My fault.
But the tornado that rolled through downtown Atlanta, wreaking havoc on the SEC Basketball Tournament and making heros out of the UGA basketball team, got me obvserving the local TV media landscape yet again.
One of the more interesting things I observed is that WSB-TV decided to post some of its storm coverage to YouTube in order to get the video out to the masses. This, to some extent, was WSB-TV somewhat abandoning its own online video technology in favor of simply posting to YouTube. The video below appears to be raw aerial footage with audio of Mark Winne communicating back to the TV station over the private radio system.
I've long said that the video functionality of WSB's Web site is just not very good. This is a great example of what appears to be the station adapting during a time of crisis and realizing that the simplicity of YouTube would win out over the complexity of their own system. I say kudos. Not to mention, posting on YouTube leads to other bloggers, such as myself, embedding the video on our blogs, reinforcing the WSB-TV brand.
If I'm a betting man, it appears that WSB's "Internet Reporter," Nelson Hicks is the guy behind this. Nelson is a reporter that you don't see on the TV, but his face and voice are on WSBTV.com on a regular basis. He's a sharp guy and is doing a good job of giving his reporting many "legs" online.
I have another blog post on this topic coming this weekend. I'll discuss whether or not WSB-TV might face copyright issues by posting its own stuff to YouTube - at least from my perspective.
More on that after the break.
